Oscar Piastri
McLaren F1 TeamCareer History
Oscar Piastri was born on April 6, 2001, in Melbourne, Australia. He began karting at the age of nine and quickly showed exceptional talent, winning multiple Australian karting titles before moving to Europe to pursue his single-seater ambitions. His family relocated to England to support his racing career, a significant sacrifice that would prove well worth it.
Piastri's junior formula career was nothing short of extraordinary. In 2019, he won the Formula Renault Eurocup championship, and in 2020, he stepped up to FIA Formula 3 where he won the title in his rookie season with Prema Racing, beating future F1 drivers like Logan Sargeant and Frederik Vesti. Not content with that, he moved to Formula 2 in 2021 and won that championship too, also with Prema — making him the first driver since Charles Leclerc to win F3 and F2 in back-to-back years.
Despite being the F2 champion, Piastri found himself without a race seat for 2022 as Alpine had no vacancy. He served as Alpine's reserve driver, gaining valuable experience in F1 machinery during test sessions and Friday practice outings. Then came one of the most dramatic silly-season stories in F1 history: Alpine announced Piastri as their 2023 driver, only for Piastri himself to publicly deny he had signed a contract. The Contract Recognition Board ruled in McLaren's favour, and Piastri was confirmed as a McLaren driver for 2023.
His rookie F1 season at McLaren was impressive from the outset. He scored his first points at the British Grand Prix, his first podium at the Japanese Grand Prix via a sprint race, and then took a stunning maiden victory at the Qatar Grand Prix sprint. His composure and consistency throughout the year earned widespread praise, and he finished the season a strong 10th in the championship despite McLaren's car only becoming truly competitive in the second half of the year.
The 2024 season saw Piastri take a major step forward. He won the Hungarian Grand Prix — his first conventional race victory — in a dramatic team orders situation with teammate Norris. He added further victories and podiums, establishing himself as one of the fastest and most complete drivers on the grid. Together with Norris, Piastri helped McLaren secure the Constructors' Championship, their first since 1998.
Known for his dry Australian humour, calm demeanour, and clinical racing style, Piastri has drawn comparisons to multiple world champions. He forms one of the most formidable driver pairings in F1 alongside Norris at McLaren.
