Silver Arrow Dominance: Mercedes Tipped as Early Frontrunner for 2026 F1 Season
Esteban Ocon believes Mercedes could be the team to beat in the 2026 Formula 1 season, while Audi and Cadillac are expected to struggle at the back of the grid. The reigning champions impressed during a recent private test in Barcelona, completing an impressive 500 laps over just three days.

The road to the 2026 Formula 1 season is already paved, and if Esteban Ocon's predictions hold true, it could be a familiar sight at the front of the grid. The Alpine driver believes Mercedes might emerge as the early favorites for the upcoming championship, while new entrants Audi and Cadillac could find themselves languishing at the back.
Ocon's assessment comes on the heels of a recent private test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where the German manufacturer's new Silver Arrow demonstrated its potential. Over the course of just three days, the team managed to complete an astounding 500 laps, showcasing both impressive reliability and competitive pace relative to the opposition.
"Mercedes looked really strong in Barcelona," Ocon revealed. "The number of laps they were able to complete and the speed they showed was quite remarkable. They seem to have a real handle on the new regulations, and that could give them a significant advantage heading into the 2026 season."
While the reigning champions appear poised to maintain their dominance, the picture is less rosy for the sport's newest participants. Audi, set to join the fray in 2026, and their technical partner Cadillac are expected to face an uphill battle in their maiden campaign.
"The new teams like Audi and Cadillac will have a lot of work to do," Ocon acknowledged. "Breaking into the established order of Formula 1 is never easy, and they'll need to make huge strides if they want to be competitive right out of the gate."
As the teams continue their preparations for the 2026 season, the early indications suggest that the battle at the front could be a familiar one, with Mercedes potentially emerging as the team to beat once again.

- MGU-K power increased significantly
- Larger energy store capacity
- Aims to attract new manufacturers
Official FIA Text
For 2026, the power unit will comprise a 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged internal combustion engine with a significantly enhanced electrical component. The MGU-H will be removed. The electrical power output will increase substantially with a more powerful MGU-K and larger energy store.

In Simple Terms
New F1 teams must follow the same financial rules as established teams starting from the year before they join the championship. - New teams must comply with F1 Financial Regulations in their first year
- Rules apply from the Full Year Financial Reporting Period before their debut season
- Exception granted: new teams are exempted from Article D7.2.1 requirements
- This rule helps new entrants manage the financial burden of joining F1
Official FIA Text

Additional Power Unit Units

- New Power Unit manufacturers in 2026 get one additional allocation of each engine component
- This concession only applies to manufacturers in their first year of supplying F1 engines
- The extra unit applies to all Power Unit elements defined in Article B8.2.2

Official FIA Text
Each driver will be permitted to use an additional unit for each of the Power Unit elements in Article B8.2.2 in the 2026 Championship if the Power Unit is supplied by a PU Manufacturer in its first year of supplying Power Units.
