Antonelli's Dominant Display Caps Strong Mercedes showing at Bahrain Winter Testing
Andrea Kimi Antonelli demonstrated impressive pace on the final day of Bahrain pre-season testing, piloting the Mercedes W17 to the quickest time and reinforcing the team's status as a major championship contender heading into the 2026 season. The 19-year-old's performance, combined with George Russell's strong morning effort, showcased Mercedes' competitive machinery and setup direction.

Mercedes left no doubt about its ambitions for the 2026 campaign, concluding the Bahrain pre-season test with a commanding display of pace that suggested the Silver Arrows will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
The highlight came on the third and final day of testing, where Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured pole position on the timing sheets with an impressive 1m33.669s lap. The young Italian driver's benchmark proved convincing, sitting 0.249s clear of his Mercedes colleague George Russell, who had earlier demonstrated the team's strengths by setting the pace during the morning portion of proceedings.
Russell's early dominance gave way to Antonelli's afternoon masterclass, as the 19-year-old took control of the W17 and delivered a statement performance that underscored Mercedes' technical progress. The consecutive first and second positions represented the ideal conclusion to the week's running, with both drivers showcasing different strengths across the test schedule and providing the Brackley-based outfit with valuable data and confidence heading toward the campaign proper.
The demonstration of form serves as an early indicator that Mercedes has closed the gap competitively, with their updated machinery appearing well-balanced across varying track conditions and fuel loads throughout the Bahrain test window.
