Multiple competitors face suspensions, lengthy disciplinary measures, and anticipated technical issues as the grid readies itself for battle.

The moment F1 fans have been waiting for has arrived—race week for the 2026 season is underway. However, the excitement of the campaign's inaugural weekend comes with considerable complications for several teams and drivers heading into the Australian Grand Prix.
Significant obstacles await various competitors as they tackle the opening round. These include race bans for certain participants, a substantial 455-day FIA sanction hanging over proceedings, and strategic pre-planned retirements that are expected to impact the weekend's proceedings.

Article D12.3.2
Examples of Aggravating Factors
Chapter: D12
In Simple Terms
When F1 decides on penalties for breaking the cost cap rules, they look at whether teams made things worse by refusing to cooperate, lying, hiding evidence, or breaking the rules multiple times before. The worse the behavior, the harsher the punishment.
- Uncooperative behavior and dishonesty make penalties more severe
- Deliberately hiding information or committing fraud significantly increases punishment
- Teams with previous violations face stricter penalties than first-time offenders
- The size of the cost cap breach itself is considered when determining penalty severity
Official FIA Text
Examples of aggravating factors include: failure to cooperate, bad faith, dishonesty, wilful concealment, fraud, multiple breaches, previous breaches, and quantum of breach of the Cost Cap.
Article D12.4.2
Suspended Sanctions - Appeal
Chapter: D12
In Simple Terms
If a driver or team appeals a penalty decision, that penalty doesn't take effect right away. Instead, it's put on hold until the International Court of Appeal (ICA) makes a final ruling on whether the penalty was fair or not.
- Penalties are automatically suspended when an appeal is filed
- The suspension lasts until the ICA (International Court of Appeal) makes a final decision
- This applies to all types of imposed sanctions
- The driver/team can continue competing without serving the penalty during the appeal process
Official FIA Text
In the event of an appeal of any decision, the application of all imposed sanctions shall be suspended until the final decision is made by the ICA.
Article D13.1.1
Sanctions Applicable to Individual F1 Team Members
Chapter: D13
In Simple Terms
If an F1 team member breaks the rules outlined in Article D3, the FIA can punish them in several ways. Penalties range from mild warnings to severe punishments like losing their FIA credentials or being banned from racing.
- Applies to individual team members who violate Article D3 obligations
- Penalties escalate from warnings to suspension from competitions
- FIA can revoke or withhold official registrations and access rights
- Can include public reprimands to hold violators accountable
Official FIA Text
Where an Individual F1 Team Member admits or is found to have breached obligations under Article D3, sanctions may include: warning, public reprimand, withholding/cancellation of FIA registrations, removal of access rights, and suspension from FIA competitions.
