Bottas Delivers Trademark Wit at Season Opener While Newey Highlights Melbourne Challenges
Valtteri Bottas made his return to the Formula 1 press circuit with characteristic humor at the opening media conference of the 2026 campaign, taking good-natured jabs at Aston Martin's championship prospects. Meanwhile, Adrian Newey reflected on the constraints the Australian Grand Prix presents to his team's performance.

The 2026 season got underway with Valtteri Bottas showcasing the trademark dry wit that fans had missed during his year serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes in 2025. Speaking at the inaugural FIA press conference of the campaign, the experienced Finn couldn't resist taking a playful swipe at Aston Martin, declaring that Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were his picks to clinch the championship—a tongue-in-cheek comment that drew attention to the Woking-based outfit.
After more than twelve months away from the regular press conference circuit, Bottas demonstrated that his sense of humor remained as sharp as ever. His comments reflected the kind of irreverent charm that has become synonymous with his media appearances over the years, making light of the competitive landscape as teams prepare for the season ahead.
Technical director Adrian Newey, meanwhile, offered insights into the practical difficulties his team faces at the Australian Grand Prix venue. Newey's assessment highlighted specific limitations that the Melbourne circuit imposes on development and strategy, suggesting that certain challenges will need to be managed carefully as the season unfolds.
