Mercedes Dominates Australian opener as Russell Holds Off Ferrari Challenge
George Russell secured victory at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, piloting his Mercedes to the top step of the podium ahead of Ferrari's pursuit. The Silver Arrows demonstrated their early-season strength with a commanding one-two result, establishing themselves as the team to beat in 2026.

The 2026 Formula 1 season got off to a commanding start for Mercedes at the Australian Grand Prix, where George Russell proved too strong for his competitors over the course of the race.
Russell's path to victory wasn't straightforward, however. Ferrari mounted a determined challenge throughout the afternoon, keeping the Mercedes driver under constant pressure as both teams battled for supremacy on the Albert Park circuit. Despite the Scuderia's efforts to mount a challenge, Russell managed to repel every advance and secure the checkered flag.
The result proved emphatic for Mercedes, who locked out the podium's top two positions and signaled their intentions for the remainder of the season. Ferrari's strong showing from behind, meanwhile, suggests a competitive battle lies ahead between the sport's traditional powerhouses as the campaign unfolds.
