Piastri Accepts McLaren's Grid Position as Realistic Assessment of Team Strength in China
McLaren secured fifth and sixth place on the grid for the Chinese Grand Prix, with Oscar Piastri viewing the result as reflective of the team's current competitive standing. While Piastri expressed acceptance of their qualifying performance, teammate Lando Norris indicated that McLaren remain trailing the front-running competition.

Following McLaren's qualifying effort at the Chinese Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri has offered a measured perspective on where the team genuinely stands in the 2026 season pecking order. The Australian driver, who lined up fifth on the grid alongside teammate Lando Norris in sixth, characterised the result as an honest representation of McLaren's capabilities relative to their rivals.
"We're about where we belong," Piastri stated in the immediate aftermath of qualifying, suggesting a degree of realism about the team's current competitive position. His assessment implies that while the result may not satisfy McLaren's ambitions, it aligns with the team's performance level at this stage of the campaign.
Adding weight to this evaluation, Norris offered a more candid observation regarding the competitive gap facing McLaren. The British driver suggested the team finds themselves operating at a disadvantage, noting that they are "a step behind" the teams positioned ahead of them on the grid. This candid acknowledgment from Norris underscores the work that lies ahead for McLaren as they seek to close the deficit to their front-running competitors and establish themselves among the elite contenders this season.
