Kimi Antonelli found himself at a loss for words as emotion overtook him on the podium at Shanghai, his eyes streaming with tears following a triumphant maiden Grand Prix victory. The Mercedes star's breakthrough win at the Chinese Grand Prix came on the heels of a historic achievement—just days earlier, he had become Formula 1's youngest-ever qualifying pole sitter.

The 2026 race at the Shanghai International Circuit proved to be a pulsating contest, with Antonelli engaged in a fierce tussle against Ferrari throughout the afternoon. However, the emotional toll of his achievement extended beyond the satisfying feeling of crossing the line first. As the final laps unfolded, Antonelli was forced to execute an evasive maneuver that sent his car temporarily off the racing surface—a moment that threatened to derail his historic afternoon.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of his victory, Antonelli reflected on the tension-filled conclusion to his race. "I gave myself a heart attack at the end," the young Mercedes driver revealed, describing the near-catastrophe that had put his maiden win in genuine jeopardy during the closing stages. The off-track excursion had clearly weighed heavily on Antonelli's mind, making his ultimate triumph all the more meaningful and emotionally significant.
