In Simple Terms
The steering column is the mechanical assembly that connects the steering wheel to the car's power steering system. It includes all the tubes, bearings, brackets, and electronic components that make steering work, plus the parts that protect the driver in a crash.
- Transfers steering input from the wheel through to the power-assisted steering system
- Must include safety features to pass crash impact tests
- Covers forward and rearward column sections with all mounting brackets and chassis attachments
- Contains local electrical and electronic components needed for steering function
