Pit Lane Starters Join Formation Lap Behind Safety Car

Chapter: B5

In Simple Terms

If a car starts from the pit lane, it has to wait until all the cars on the track have passed the end of the pit lane before joining the formation lap. It then completes all the formation laps with everyone else and must re-enter the pit lane in the correct order when the safety car comes back in.

  • Pit lane starters cannot join the formation lap immediately - they must wait for all track cars to pass the pit lane exit first
  • Pit lane starters must complete every formation lap alongside other cars
  • Cars must return to pit lane in the correct order once the safety car returns to start
  • This prevents pit lane starters from gaining an advantage by joining the grid early
Official FIA Text
