Safety Car on Last Lap

Chapter: B5

In Simple Terms

If the safety car is still out on the final lap of the race, it will pull into the pit lane at the end of that lap so the race can finish under normal conditions. The only exception is if the Race Director decides the safety car needs to stay out for safety reasons even after the race ends.

  • Safety car automatically exits at the end of the last lap unless safety conditions require it to remain
  • This rule allows races to finish with racing action rather than under safety car conditions
  • The Race Director has final discretion to keep the safety car deployed if necessary for safety
  • The rule applies whether the safety car was already deployed or deployed during the final lap
Official FIA Text

If the safety car is still deployed at the beginning of the last lap, or is deployed during the last lap, unless the Race Director deems the continued presence of the safety car after the end-of-session signal is required, it will enter the Pit Lane at the end of the lap.
