Fastener Visual Identification
Chapter: C10
In Simple Terms
F1 wheels use a two-stage fastening system, and the rules require that pit crew members can easily see if a wheel bolt or nut hasn't been properly installed. This visual check helps prevent dangerous wheel failures during races by making obvious mistakes immediately visible to the team.
- Dual stage retaining systems (wheel fasteners) must have visual indicators for incorrect installation
- Allows pit crew to quickly spot if a wheel bolt/nut is not fully tightened or misaligned
- Prevents safety hazards from wheels coming loose during races
- Part of F1's strict wheel retention safety regulations
