Article C12.1.3
Demonstration by Calculation
Chapter: C12
In Simple Terms
Teams must prove their car parts are strong enough using calculations, with a safety margin of 1.0 for metal components and composite materials. This means the parts must be able to handle the maximum expected stress without breaking. The FIA can ask teams to show their computer models and material testing data to verify these calculations.
- Reserve factor of 1.0 means parts must be safe at their ultimate breaking point
- Applies to both metallic (metal) and composite (carbon fiber, etc.) components
- Teams prove strength through calculation and computer modeling rather than physical testing
- FIA has authority to request detailed models and material property documentation for verification
Official FIA Text
Reserve factor of 1.0 at ultimate failure for metallic components and first-ply failure for composites should be used for strength demonstrations. FIA may request models and material properties.
