Side impact structure push-off calculations

Chapter: C13.5

In Simple Terms

F1 teams must prove through engineering calculations that the side protection structures on their cars can handle massive pushing forces from multiple directions at once. These structures need to withstand 40,000-60,000 Newtons of force pushing backward and forward, plus 35,000-27,000 Newtons of force pushing up and down.

  • Side impact structures must withstand simultaneous horizontal forces in both rearward (40kN) and forward (60kN) directions
  • Vertical loads of 35kN (downward) and 27kN (upward) must be supported without failure
  • Teams must provide detailed calculations proving their mounting systems can handle all these forces combined
  • These requirements protect drivers during lateral collisions and side impacts
Official FIA Text

Teams must supply calculations showing mountings of upper and lower side impact structures withstand 40kN/60kN horizontal loads simultaneously in rearward/forward directions and 35kN/27kN vertical loads.
