Front Impact Structure Specification
Chapter: C13.6
In Simple Terms
F1 cars must have a special shock-absorbing structure at the front that protects the driver's survival cell (the reinforced cockpit area). This structure is bolted on separately using at least four equally-strong attachment points arranged symmetrically to ensure balanced protection in a crash.
- Impact absorbing structure must be separate from and positioned in front of the survival cell
- Minimum four attachment points required with equal strength and symmetric arrangement around the car's centerline
- Specific cross-sectional dimensions are mandated to ensure adequate energy absorption
- Symmetric design ensures the structure protects the driver equally from impacts on either side
Official FIA Text
Impact absorbing structure must be fitted in front of Survival Cell, not integral to it. Must be solidly attached using minimum four attachments of equal strength, arranged symmetrically about plane Y=0. Cross-sectional requirements specified.
