Materials, processes and construction – General (Components inside the PU Perimeter)

Chapter: C15

In Simple Terms

F1 engines have strict material restrictions to keep competition fair and costs controlled. Teams cannot use certain lightweight or exotic materials like magnesium alloys, metal matrix composites, or materials with too much platinum and similar rare elements unless they have special permission from the FIA.

  • Banned materials include magnesium-based alloys, metal matrix composites, and intermetallic materials
  • Alloys cannot contain more than 5% by weight of platinum, ruthenium, iridium, or rhenium
  • Exceptions may be granted by the FIA for specific approved applications
  • These restrictions apply to all components within the Power Unit perimeter
Official FIA Text

Unless explicitly permitted for a specific application, the following materials may not be used on the Power Unit: Magnesium based alloys, Metal Matrix Composites, Intermetallic materials, Alloys containing more than 5% by weight of Platinum/Ruthenium/Iridium/Rhenium, and others as detailed.
