Coating Restrictions
Chapter: C15
In Simple Terms
F1 teams can apply protective coatings to car parts, but they can't be too thick—either a quarter of the part's thickness or 0.8mm maximum, whichever is smaller. Fancy metals like gold and platinum have even stricter limits at just 0.035mm, and graphene coatings are banned entirely.
- Coating thickness capped at 25% of section thickness or 0.8mm maximum
- Precious metals (gold, platinum, ruthenium, iridium, rhenium) limited to 0.035mm only
- Graphene coatings are completely prohibited in F1
- Rule ensures fair competition and prevents unfair performance advantages
