Energy Recovery System Casings

Chapter: C15

In Simple Terms

F1 cars' energy recovery systems (which harvest power from braking and engine heat) must have their metal casings made from aluminum-based alloys. There's one exception: the cooling base plate for the power electronics can be made from a metal matrix composite material instead.

  • All metallic casings for energy recovery/storage systems must be aluminum-based alloy
  • Metal matrix composite is permitted specifically for the power electronic cooling base plate
  • This regulation ensures standardization while allowing limited material flexibility for thermal management
