In Simple Terms
F1 cars' energy recovery systems (which harvest power from braking and engine heat) must have their metal casings made from aluminum-based alloys. There's one exception: the cooling base plate for the power electronics can be made from a metal matrix composite material instead.
- All metallic casings for energy recovery/storage systems must be aluminum-based alloy
- Metal matrix composite is permitted specifically for the power electronic cooling base plate
- This regulation ensures standardization while allowing limited material flexibility for thermal management
