Article C16.1.8
Components Requiring Engine Oil Lubrication
Chapter: C16
In Simple Terms
F1 engines have several critical components—the main engine, turbocharger, and electric motor systems—that all need special approved oil to run properly and stay protected. Teams can't use just any oil; it must meet F1's strict specifications to ensure fair competition and engine reliability.
- Four main components require approved engine oil: ICE (internal combustion engine), turbocharger, MGUK mechanical transmission, and MGUK (Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic)
- Only engine oil that meets the FIA's official definition in article C16.1.5 is permitted
- Using unapproved oil could provide performance advantages, which is why strict rules exist
- This regulation ensures all teams operate under identical technical constraints
Official FIA Text
ICE, turbocharger, MGUK mechanical transmission, and MGUK can only be lubricated with approved engine oil as defined in C16.1.5.
