Article C17.2.3
Reverse Engineering Prohibition
Chapter: C17
In Simple Terms
Teams cannot copy other teams' car designs by taking photos, 3D scans, or using other imaging technology to recreate them. The FIA investigates if a design's similarity to another team's car comes from illegal copying or from teams independently developing the same idea.
- Teams are prohibited from using photographs, stereophotogrammetry, 3D cameras, or surface scanning to reverse engineer competitor designs
- The FIA has the authority to determine whether design similarities result from reverse engineering or legitimate independent development
- This rule applies specifically to LTC (Low Total Cost) car components and design procedures
- The regulation aims to protect innovation and prevent teams from gaining unfair advantages through copying
Official FIA Text
No F1 Team may design LTCs based on reverse engineering using photographs, stereophotogrammetry, 3D cameras or surface scanning. FIA determines if resemblance results from reverse engineering or legitimate independent work.
