Closed Aerodynamic Fairing

Chapter: C3

In Simple Terms

Teams can add a small aerodynamic cover (fairing) at certain trailing edges where parts meet, but it must blend smoothly into the car's body and stay within very specific size limits. This prevents teams from hiding illegal aero modifications under the guise of a 'fairing.'

  • Fairings are only allowed where there's a discontinuity (gap) in tangency at trailing edges with filleted (rounded) corners
  • The fairing must maintain smooth continuity and tangency with surrounding surfaces
  • Size is strictly limited: it must fit within a cone with base radius 1.2x the minimum radius and height 3x the maximum trailing edge fillet radius
  • This rule prevents teams from disguising illegal aerodynamic devices as cosmetic fairings
Official FIA Text

If discontinuity in tangency exists at trailing edge where Fillet Radius joined parts, Closed Aerodynamic Fairing may be added. Must maintain continuity and tangency, fit within Acute Circular Cone with base radius 1.2x minimum radius and height 3x maximum trailing edge Fillet Radius.
