Article C4.5.2
Driver Mass and Ballast Minimum
Chapter: C4
In Simple Terms
Every F1 driver, including their racing suit and helmet, must weigh at least 82kg during a race. If a driver is naturally lighter than this, they can add ballast (extra weight) to their car to meet the minimum. This ensures all drivers compete on equal terms regardless of their body weight.
- The 82kg minimum includes the driver's body weight plus any added ballast
- Ballast can be added to the car if the driver weighs less than 82kg
- This rule applies at all times during competition, including practice and qualifying
- All drivers must meet this requirement to ensure fair competition
