Spark energy limit

Chapter: C5

In Simple Terms

F1 engines have a limit on how much electrical energy can be used each time the spark plugs fire to ignite the fuel mixture. Each spark is capped at 120 millijoules of energy, which prevents teams from gaining unfair advantages through excessive electrical ignition systems.

  • Spark plugs are limited to 120.0 millijoules of energy per ignition event
  • This rule ensures fair competition by preventing teams from using excessive electrical power for combustion
  • The regulation applies to the MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic) assisted ignition systems in modern hybrid F1 engines
  • Breach of this limit can result in engine penalties and technical infringements
Official FIA Text

The spark energy per ignition is limited to a maximum of 120.0mJ.
