Article C5.18.2
MGU-K Rotating Parts Link
Chapter: C5
In Simple Terms
The MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic) must be directly connected to the engine's crankshaft at all times during normal racing, spinning at a fixed ratio to it. Think of it like a mechanical chain—the MGU-K and its shaft must also run parallel to the crankshaft, similar to how gears align in a transmission.
- MGU-K rotating parts must maintain a permanent mechanical link to the ICE crankshaft
- The connection must operate at a fixed speed ratio (not variable)
- The MGU-K drive axis must be parallel to the crankshaft axis for proper alignment
- These requirements apply during normal operating conditions throughout the race
Official FIA Text
Under normal operating conditions all MGU-K rotating parts must be permanently mechanically linked to the ICE with a fixed speed ratio to the crankshaft. The MGU-K and its drive axis must be parallel to the crankshaft axis.
