Energy Storage Sources

Chapter: C5

In Simple Terms

F1 hybrid cars can only store electrical energy using the official ES Cells (energy storage cells) specified in the regulations. The only exception is for safety systems in the energy storage unit. This ensures all teams use the same type of energy storage technology.

  • ES Cells are the only allowed energy storage source in the hybrid system
  • Safety systems are exempt from this restriction
  • All teams must use the officially defined ES Cell specification
  • This regulation prevents teams from using unauthorized battery technologies
Official FIA Text

With the exception of the ES safety systems, the ES Cells defined in C5.2.25 are the only energy storage source allowed in the ES.
