Article C5.20.10
ES Main Enclosure Fire Protection
Chapter: C5
In Simple Terms
The protective box around the F1 car's energy storage system must use fire-resistant materials that meet strict safety standards (UL94 V0 rating) unless the battery cells have been tested and proven they won't overheat on their own. This is a critical safety requirement to prevent fires during races.
- The Energy Storage (ES) Main Enclosure must use materials with minimum UL94 V0 fire protection rating
- This requirement can be waived only if the ES cells are proven to not be susceptible to self-heating phenomenon
- UL94 V0 is a strict international fire safety standard for materials
- This rule protects drivers and prevents potential fire hazards during competition
