High Voltage Location Restrictions
Chapter: C5
In Simple Terms
F1 cars can only have high voltage electrical systems inside the main power unit, with two exceptions: the power box (which can boost voltage up to 80V) and when the battery is being charged or discharged outside the car. This safety rule keeps dangerous high voltage contained in safe locations.
- High voltage must be contained within the RV-PU-ERS (the main power unit and energy recovery system)
- The power box is allowed to have high voltage and can generate up to 80V DC for the boost converter
- High voltage is permitted outside the main system only when using an off-board charger to charge or discharge the energy store
- This restriction protects teams, equipment, and ensures electrical safety during F1 operations
Official FIA Text
No High Voltage is permitted outside of the RV-PU-ERS, except: a. For the High Voltage inside the power box where the boost converter can generate up to 80V DC. b. When an off-board charger is connected to charge or discharge the ES.
