AC Coupling Bonding Requirements

Chapter: C5

In Simple Terms

F1 cars have two electrical systems: high voltage (for the hybrid power unit) and low voltage (for standard electronics). This rule requires special bonding connections for any component that could accidentally transfer high voltage to the low voltage system, preventing dangerous electrical failures.

  • Protects the low voltage system from accidental high voltage coupling
  • Applies to all components with wires, cables, or harnesses that could conduct current through AC coupling
  • Bonding creates a safe electrical path to prevent system damage and potential safety hazards
  • Required for components in close proximity to high voltage systems, even if not directly connected
Official FIA Text

To mitigate the risk failure mode where a High Voltage is AC coupled onto the car's low voltage system, bonding is required for any system component to which a wire, cable or harness connects, or passes in close proximity, and which is able to conduct current by means of AC coupling.
