Coolant Header Tanks

Chapter: C5

In Simple Terms

F1 cars must have a safety valve on their coolant tanks that automatically releases pressure if it gets too high (above 3.75 bar). This prevents the cooling system from exploding due to extreme heat and pressure during a race. The valve must be approved by the FIA and meet specific technical standards.

  • All coolant header tanks require an FIA-approved pressure relief valve
  • The valve must be set to release at a maximum of 3.75 barG (bar gauge pressure)
  • This safety feature prevents coolant system failures from excessive pressure buildup
  • Technical specifications for approved valves are detailed in FIA document FIA-F1-DOC-C055
Official FIA Text

Any header tank used on the car must be fitted with an FIA approved pressure relief valve which is set to a maximum of 3.75 barG, details of the relief valve may be found in the document FIA-F1-DOC-C055.
