In Simple Terms
Each piston in an F1 engine must have exactly three rings: two that compress the fuel mixture and one that controls oil. This design ensures the engine runs efficiently and reliably throughout the race.
- Every piston requires exactly three piston rings total
- Two rings are compression rings for sealing combustion
- One ring is an oil control ring to manage lubrication
- This configuration is mandatory for all F1 power units
