Connecting rod length

Chapter: C5

In Simple Terms

The connecting rod is a metal link that transfers power from the engine's crankshaft to the piston. F1 regulations require this rod to be between 119.5mm and 120.5mm long, measured from the crankshaft end to the piston end. This tight tolerance ensures all engines are fair and consistent.

  • Connecting rod length must be precisely between 119.5mm and 120.5mm
  • Measurement is taken from the center of the crankshaft journal bore to the center of the piston pin bore
  • This specification ensures engine performance parity between competitors
  • Violation of this tolerance would give an unfair mechanical advantage
