Engine intake air purity

Chapter: C5

In Simple Terms

F1 engines can only burn fuel and air—nothing else can be added to the air going into the engine. Teams also cannot recycle exhaust gases back into the combustion process. This keeps engines running on pure combustion rather than tricks that might artificially boost performance.

  • Only fuel and air are allowed in the combustion chamber
  • No additives or foreign substances can be introduced into the intake air
  • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems are completely forbidden
  • This rule ensures fair competition and standardized engine performance
Official FIA Text

The addition of any substance other than fuel into the air destined for combustion is forbidden. Exhaust gas recirculation is forbidden.
