Variable valve timing prohibition
Technical Regulations
Article C5.7.2
Variable valve timing prohibition
Chapter: C5
In Simple Terms
F1 engines are not allowed to use variable valve timing or variable valve lift systems. This means the timing of when the engine's intake and exhaust valves open and close, and how much they open, must remain fixed and cannot be adjusted during operation.
- Variable valve timing (VVT) systems that adjust valve opening/closing times are prohibited
- Variable valve lift systems that change valve opening distances are prohibited
- Engine valve timing and lift must remain constant and cannot be electronically or mechanically adjusted
- This regulation ensures all teams use the same fundamental engine architecture without advanced adaptive valve technology
