Primary heat exchanger specification and technology

In Simple Terms

F1 teams must use aluminum alloy for the main cooling system parts on their cars. The core (the part that does the cooling) cannot be made using 3D printing technology, and the tubes carrying coolant must have walls at least 0.18mm thick to ensure durability and safety.

  • Primary heat exchanger cores and header tanks must be made from aluminum alloy
  • 3D printing (additive manufacturing) is prohibited for manufacturing the core
  • Cooling tubes must have a minimum wall thickness of 0.18mm to maintain structural integrity

For Primary Heat Exchangers used on the car, the following restrictions apply: Heat Exchanger Core and header tanks must be made from aluminium alloy; Core must not be produced using additive manufacturing; Tubes must have minimum wall thickness of 0.18mm.
