Article C8.2.1
Control electronics - FIA Standard ECU
Chapter: C8
In Simple Terms
All major systems in an F1 car—from the engine and fuel to brakes, tires, and movable wings—must be controlled by the same standardized computer (ECU) supplied by the FIA. This ensures fair competition by preventing teams from using custom software to gain unfair advantages.
- The FIA Standard ECU controls every critical system in the car, not just the engine
- Teams cannot develop their own control electronics or modify the FIA-supplied unit
- This rule applies to power units, fuel systems, transmissions, brakes, tire pressure, and adjustable aerodynamics
- Standardization promotes fair competition and simplifies cost control across all teams
Official FIA Text
