ECU homologation and component sealing

Chapter: C8

In Simple Terms

The FIA officially approves and seals all computer components that control a Formula 1 car's engine and systems. Once sealed, teams cannot open, modify, or tamper with these parts in any way—if they do, it's considered cheating.

  • All ECUs (engine control units), sensors, and actuators must be officially approved by the FIA
  • Each component is sealed with a unique identification that must never be broken
  • Any disassembly or modification of sealed components is strictly prohibited
  • Teams must maintain seal integrity throughout the entire season
Official FIA Text

All ECUs, control sensors, and actuators will be homologated by the FIA. Each component will be sealed and uniquely identified. These components may not be disassembled or modified in any way and seals must remain intact.
