Article C9.2.3
Clutch Operating Device - Travel Positions
Chapter: C9
In Simple Terms
The clutch pedal in an F1 car must have a defined range of motion - from fully engaged (clutch fully connected to the engine) at minimum travel to fully disengaged (clutch completely disconnected with no power transfer) at maximum travel. This ensures consistent clutch behavior and prevents drivers from having unpredictable engagement points.
- The clutch's minimum travel position must correspond to when it is fully engaged and in its normal rest state
- The clutch's maximum travel position must correspond to full disengagement where no useable torque can be transmitted
- This regulation standardizes clutch operating range to ensure fairness and consistent performance across all cars
- Clutch travel positions are measured and must fall within these defined parameters
Official FIA Text
The minimum and maximum travel positions of the clutch operating device must correspond to the Clutch fully engaged normal rest position and fully disengaged (incapable of transmitting any useable torque) positions respectively.
