Article C9.8.1
Automatic Gear Changes
Chapter: C9
In Simple Terms
F1 drivers must manually shift gears themselves—the car cannot automatically change gears for them. However, the car's systems can help manage the clutch and engine power during gear changes. This rule ensures drivers remain in full control of their cars and maintains the skill and challenge of driving.
- Drivers must manually control gear changes; fully automatic transmissions are not allowed
- The car's clutch and power unit can assist during gear changes without being under direct driver control
- Automatic gear changing is classified as a 'driver aid' and therefore prohibited under F1 regulations
Official FIA Text
Automatic gear changes are considered a driver aid and are therefore not permitted. For gear changing purposes, Clutch and Power Unit torque need not be under driver control.
