Gearbox Control Inputs

Chapter: C9

In Simple Terms

Teams cannot program their gearbox to automatically shift based on where the car is positioned on the track or how far it has traveled. The gearbox control system must use other inputs like throttle position, engine speed, or driver commands—not location data.

  • Gearbox software cannot use track position or distance as a shifting trigger
  • Teams must rely on legitimate inputs like RPM, throttle, and driver input instead
  • This rule prevents teams from gaining unfair advantages through automated track-position-based strategies
  • The regulation ensures fair competition by limiting what data can control automatic systems
Official FIA Text
