Examples of Mitigating Factors

Chapter: D12

In Simple Terms

When a team breaks cost cap rules, the FIA can consider reasons that might reduce their punishment. These include if the team admits the mistake themselves, has followed the rules in the past, faced unexpected circumstances beyond their control, or fully helped investigators.

  • Teams can receive lighter penalties if they voluntarily admit to breaking cost cap rules before being caught
  • A good compliance history in previous seasons can help reduce punishment
  • Unexpected events (Force Majeure) that caused the breach may be considered as reasons for lighter penalties
  • Full cooperation with FIA investigators can help reduce the severity of penalties
