Graham Hill's 5th Monaco Win

Hill earned the nickname "Mr. Monaco" with his 5th victory in the principality - a record that would stand for decades.

1982classic

Chaos on Final Laps

In the most dramatic finish ever, Prost crashed while leading with 1 lap to go, Patrese spun and stalled, de Cesaris ran out of fuel, and Patrese inherited the win after his car was bump-started.

Did You Know?

  • 1The circuit runs through the streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, largely unchanged since 1929
  • 2It is the slowest circuit on the F1 calendar with an average speed around 160 km/h
  • 3The tunnel creates unique lighting challenges - drivers go from bright sun to darkness and back in seconds
  • 4Swimming Pool complex runs alongside the actual Rainier III Nautical Stadium pool
  • 5Overtaking is nearly impossible - Ayrton Senna said "To win at Monaco you need to put the car on pole and hope"
  • 6Graham Hill won five times (1963-65, 1968-69), Senna six times - both earned the nickname "Mr. Monaco"
  • 7The race is one-third the distance of other GPs but takes almost as long due to the slow speeds
