Ferrari's Charles Leclerc emerged from sprint qualifying visibly exasperated, unable to comprehend why his car had surrendered such a substantial chunk of performance when it mattered most. The Monegasque driver ultimately secured sixth on the grid for the sprint race, a result that fell far short of his expectations heading into the session.

The source of Leclerc's frustration was a mysterious power deficit that materialized during his qualifying attempt. Rather than displaying the competitive edge Ferrari had hoped to bring to the weekend, the car appeared to be missing significant performance on the straights—a concerning development that left even the experienced driver searching for answers.

Speaking candidly about his bewilderment, Leclerc highlighted the severity of the issue, pointing to a half-second loss of pace that couldn't be adequately explained. The unexpected struggles raised immediate questions about what had triggered the power loss and whether Ferrari could identify and remedy the problem before subsequent sessions. For a team and driver with championship aspirations, such unexplained performance drops represented precisely the kind of setback that could prove costly as the season progresses.

Sprint Qualifying Classification

Chapter: B2

In Simple Terms

The Sprint Qualifying grid is set by ranking the 20 drivers based on their performance across three qualifying sessions. The top 10 fastest drivers from SQ3 fill positions 1-10, then the 5 drivers eliminated in SQ2 take positions 11-15, and the 5 drivers eliminated in SQ1 take positions 16-20. If a driver is too slow in SQ1 (more than 7% slower than the fastest time) or doesn't complete a lap, they don't qualify.

  • Top 10 positions determined by fastest times in SQ3 (Sprint Qualifying Session 3)
  • Positions 11-15 filled by the 5 drivers eliminated in SQ2, ranked by their best SQ2 times
  • Positions 16-20 filled by the 5 drivers eliminated in SQ1, ranked by their best SQ1 times
  • Drivers exceeding the 107% time rule or failing to set a lap are unclassified and don't start Sprint Qualifying
