Mercedes has made an emphatic statement at the Chinese Grand Prix, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli establishing themselves as the clear pacsetters during Friday's only practice session.

As Shanghai hosts the first sprint event of the 2026 season, teams had just one practice session to fine-tune their setups and gather data before sprint qualifying takes place. Russell made the most of this limited preparation time, clocking a best lap of 1m34.169s on medium-compound tyres as the grid ran through the opening phase of the session.

The performance disparity between Mercedes and the competition was evident, with both drivers operating comfortably clear of their rivals. However, the session proved troublesome for some competitors, as Carlos Sainz and Kimi Lindblad encountered mechanical difficulties that hampered their ability to accumulate meaningful running.

Russell's commanding effort served as an early warning to the championship contenders that Mercedes arrives in Shanghai with the setup and performance required to challenge for sprint victory and position themselves favourably for the main race event.
