Russell Dominates Shanghai Practice as Mercedes Flexes Its Muscles
George Russell delivered a commanding performance during practice sessions at Shanghai, leading the field ahead of McLaren and Ferrari's driver pairings. Mercedes continues to demonstrate superior pace compared to its main rivals as the 2026 season progresses.

Mercedes is making an unmistakable statement about its competitive standing this season, with George Russell's dominant display during Shanghai practice serving as the latest evidence of the Silver Arrows' prowess. The British driver's quickest lap times placed him firmly at the top of the timing sheets, establishing Mercedes as the team to beat heading into the weekend's action.
Behind Russell's strong showing, the competition shaped up along familiar lines, with McLaren and Ferrari fielding their respective driver lineups in close pursuit. However, neither the Woking-based team nor the Scuderia could match the pace that Mercedes has consistently demonstrated, further cementing the German manufacturer's position as the performance leader in the current campaign.
The gulf in performance visible during practice sessions underscores Mercedes' technical advantage at this stage of the season, as Russell's supremacy over the field—particularly against McLaren and Ferrari's multiple drivers—suggests the team's design and setup approach is delivering clear benefits on track.
